Magic 2s Face Tough Opponents in Friendly

With no league game for our magic 2s, this week saw them travel to Ayr to play a friendly against University of the West of Scotland.

With a very new starting squad and lots of players playing out of position, it was clear from the outset it was going to be a tough and physical battle.

After a mix up from one of the UWS players as to where the try line was they were set in their stride and Edinburgh had to work hard in defense to maintain the green wall. After a burst lip in the first five minutes for full back Jess McClintick, and an ankle injury to follow for Maria, the girls were certainly feeling the brunt of UWS powerful tackles. Despite the force they were up against Edinburgh never gave up and with some cracking tackles from winger Georgie Pringle they stopped UWS from getting too far ahead in the first half.

The half time score was 35-0.

The second half saw captain Laura and converted footballer Chaz move out of the forwards pack and back to where they belong in the back line. With some fantastic line breaks from our new prop Sarah Donnelly, Edinburgh were able to show off their skills. After a huge team effort, McClintick got the try Edinburgh had been fighting for. After 2 great line breaks from Laura and Chaz, and some fantastic handling by the whole team, Edinburgh scored their second try of the day, with Chaz getting the ball over the line.

After another great try from UWS, Edinburgh had 3 minutes left on the clock to get some final points. With a back breaking tackle from Stevie Morrison, Edinburgh managed to turn over the ball, giving them one last chance of a try. Tackle after tackle from UWS saw Edinburgh fighting hard and fast to get over the line. After nearly ten phases the ball finally found its way over the line in the hands of Ciorstaidh Galloway, and a final successful conversion from Jess brought the full time score to 42-17.

At the end of the match captain Laura said “I am proud of every player on the pitch today, despite the loss we all came together in the second half and showed UWS who they were up against. With everyone playing so well it was hard to choose our players of the match, but after some deliberations with our coach our players of the match went to Stevie, Georgie and Chaz.”
